Light sources
Quite simply, without an adequate and appropriate light source, there is no hyperspectral imaging possible. You can have the best hardware and software in the world, but if no light gets into the imaging spectrometer, you will get no signal.
Choosing the appropriate light source for your specific application is therefore critical to achieving robust and accurate hyperspectral data collection and analysis, and there are many different options, each with varying wavelength or wavelength range, light intensity, optical stability level, optical coupling methods, and bulb life expectancy.

Tungsten halogen lamps
Spectral range: 350-3000 nm.
Cost effective, broad band and versatile hyperspectral light source.
Fully compatible with all of ClydeHSI hyperspectral scanning solutions.
Operating in the visible and IR spectral region (from 350 nm to over 3000 nm), tungsten halogen lamps are available in a wide range of electrical powers, source sizes and shapes to ensure optimum illumination of target areas.
The main consideration in the choice of tungsten halogen lamp depends on its filament size and colour temperature - the latter determining the spectral peak of the output and also the lamp lifetime: generally, as colour temperature goes up, lamp life goes down. Lamp selection therefore is often a compromise with respect to performance.
Choosing the correct tungsten halogen source for your specific application can therefore be tricky. Xenon Arc lamps
Spectral range: 250 - 2000 nm.
High intensity, high flux density continuum hyperspectral light source.
Fully compatible with all of ClydeHSI hyperspectral scanning solutions.
Xenon arc-lamps are most suited to photoluminescence instruments, as they provide a high-intensity continuum source with UV and visible output. Xenon lamps have a small arc length, (0.5 to 2.7 mm for 75 to 450 W lamps) and a high flux density. They are also available in a variety of envelope materials, allowing output from 185 nm and have relatively long operating lifetimes of up to 2000 hours.
Xenon arc-lamps are typically operated with DC power supplies, and offer the highest flux density short of a laser. The spectral output is close to that of the sun at 6000 °C, and so they also make ideal solar simulators in many experiments.
There are many important considerations when using a Xenon arc-lamp. These include: envelope materials, ozone dissipation and convection current effects on noise, cooling, arc gap and lamp life.
